Artist Dina Bean
|
|
Dina Bean is a faux finish artist from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She began her company, LDB Home & Garden Decor, in 2003 with her father, Jesse. In 2004, she started working for FrenchQuarterMarket.com. Dina first got her start with faux finishes around the mid-80's, working with ceramic as a medium. Faux finish resembles an aged medal, such as copper, bronze or iron. Dina is inspired by New Orleans architecture in the quarters, because of their old world look that “pops.” Dina is also inspired by Spanish Revival architecture, a time in history when buildings were constructed to resemble works of art. Using a pallet of colors, she began to create a look of old metal, which makes her unique artwork stand out.

Dina is self-educated in sculpting, later becoming a master mold maker in order to use all kinds of mediums to cast and work with. She then chose cement because it is fast setting, durable and, when colors are applied, gives a unusual effect. Dina creates many kinds of designs, particularly relief work from old buildings. The Gothic Era is another one of her favorite time periods to use as inspiration.

The Fleur-de-lis is a symbol that has always fascinated Dina. She recalls a story of the French pressing Irises in a book resembling what we now call the Fleur-de-lis. Later, Dina traveled to India and visited the Taj Mahal, which is adorned with the Fleur-de-lis. For Dina, the Fleur-de-lis is simply rich in Louisiana history.
Though she was born in Texas, she came to live in Baton Rouge with her family in 1977 and attended LSU. She originally studied finance! Dina is the oldest of three children; her brother and mother still reside in Baton Rouge. In her spare time Dina loves to fish, create, draw and build things with her hands.
