Shelley Hitt is a South Louisiana artist with a special love for everything fleur de lis. Shelley started painting as a teenager and was encouraged by her parents to pursue her love of art. With a background in interior design at Louisiana State University, she decided to do just that. Shelley started by painting murals and faux finishes at businesses and homes in the Baton Rouge area. “Being a stay at home mom at the time, I felt like this was a great opportunity for me to get started without sacrificing family time. The best part about painting murals was seeing the reaction of the client after the painting was complete. I personally enjoyed painting children’s rooms. They were always so excited about seeing their new room!” |

After a few years, Shelley shifted her focus to a new kind of artwork. She started painting canvases and made them into purses. She started making them as gifts for friends and family. Soon thereafter, people started calling her asking if they could buy a hand painted purse from her. Within a few months, Shelley was painting everyday to keep up. “I really didn’t expect the purses to become so popular that quick. But looking back I knew it was a cute idea and everyone really loved them.” What Shelley didn’t know at the time was HGTV was interested in featuring her in an upcoming episode of “Crafters Coast to Coast.” “I think they saw one of my purses at an art show and they contacted me. I was so excited. It was definitely a big highlight for me to be on HGTV. It was so much fun!” |

| During the time that Shelley was making her purses, she realized that most of her designs had a South Louisiana and Creole flair. She said she is definitely inspired by the beautiful landscape and architecture of Louisiana. She started painting fleur de lis on her purses in 2002. "The fleur de lis reminds me of the French Quarter, Louisiana, and my family's Creole heritage. It is a beautiful symbol." |
